Christmas chaos times 10

You've heard the old expression about herding cats, right?

I think that could be listed under the job description of preschool teacher. How they get 10 independently minded 2- and 3-year-olds to do ANYTHING together is amazing to me. Especially when I struggle to just get my one to follow directions.

Anyway, Sawyer's preschool class was having its holiday party and singalong on the Wednesday before Christmas, the last day before school break. This year, parents were invited to visit the class for the final 30 minutes so the children could sing all the holiday songs they'd been learning.

I've been to several of these preschool "productions" before, and they are quite comical. The teachers are the ones who do most of the singing while the kids either run around, cling to their parents, look at the ceiling, etc. Meanwhile, the parents are all clustered behind an invisible line, many sitting in itty-bitty chairs meant for toddlers, furiously snapping pictures or recording the event for posterity like the paparazzi.

This performance was not much different. The kids were dressed in their Christmas finest. Almost every parent was there. The teachers sang. A few kids sang or at least stayed in their seats looking like deer in headlights. A few other kids wouldn't leave their parents, who spent the entire time trying to get them to sit with the group. The rest of the kids (namely the two boys in the class) rolled around on the floor, danced around and whacked their neighbor with the stuffed Nativity dolls. (Yes, that last one was my delightful son. Such a proud moment.)

Most of the kids were in their own world by this point.

They were supposed to sing a few songs I'd never heard and then a few classics like "Jingle Bells" and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." Sawyer did not sing one word, even though I know he knows both of those songs.

Sawyer and Amelia get their groove on. There was no music. They are dancing to their own beat, for sure!

Silly time

Good thing they're so cute at this age. And God bless those poor teachers.
