The whole barnyard on parade

Every spring, Sawyer's school (along with hundreds of other preschools nationwide) celebrates the Week of the Young Child. They have special dress-up days for the children (like Monday was "Wear Your Favorite Book Character … naturally Sawyer went dressed as Thomas the Tank Engine) and cool treats (like popsicles on Tuesday). The highlight is a book parade on Thursday.

The school chooses a book, which every class reads, and then the teachers (sometimes with help from the students) make costumes (often elaborate) for the children to wear. This year's book was Ask Mr. Bear by Marjorie Flack, one of my favorite authors but not one of my favorite books. (We've read Flack's Angus series dozens of times, and it was one of my favorites as a child.) It has a birthday theme, and the preschool has been celebrating its 60th birthday all year.

Some of the teachers keep the adorable costumes a secret until the parade, so it's always fun to see how the children look. All Sawyer's teachers said was to have the children dress in black, if possible. Not an easy task on a day where the temperature was supposed to climb into the 80s; all he had was long sleeves and sweatpants.

First came the bears aka the pre-K class.

Then came the 4-year-old class dressed as cows.

After that, a flock of warm sheep grazed through.

5

Including my little lamb. Or is he a black sheep? Depends on the day.

6

A huge herd of 2-year-old goats followed.

7

Next came the most darling fuzzy white geese! Though most of them looked like they'd prefer to be elsewhere.

8

Last, was a red caboose full of roosters.

The children parade through the courtyard and then sing a few songs for the parents.

The songs are sweet, but I enjoy seeing how differently all the age groups react. The big kids usually participate, but sometimes I catch a few that look bored (as many of them have done this five times) or too cool for singing. The kids in the middle usually sing confidently and look quite happy. But many of the youngest children don't know quite what to make of this zoo and/or want their parents.

This year's songs included "Happy Birthday" for the preschool. After the parade, parents and children have a picnic on the playground. It's always delightful to spend my lunch break with my little sheep and his flock.
